Upper Mustang describes as a mosaic of remained unchanged culture and religious heritage in the world along with serene landscape and offers a taste of authentic Tibetan culture like much of Tibet, in the trans-Himalaya – one of the most beautiful corners of the world.
Reaching the upper mustang is like arriving at the hidden treasure valley of Shangri-La in the shadow of the most magnificent mountains on earth, opened 1991 for foreign travelers, Upper Mustang remains one of the few areas in Tibet’s original sphere of influence where Tibetan culture continues to survive. This area is a remote crossed only by Tibetan pilgrims and yak caravans, fields and houses separated by stonewalls, and has some of the best preserved Tibetan Buddhist cave art along numerous monasteries, chortens, mani walls which is manifestation of their rich cultural heritage. The Tibetan dialect prevails mostly in this area with some other indigenous languages. The huge five-storied white Dzong (Tibetan style fortress) and red monastery are perched on the edge of the Kali Gandaki gorge at the eastern end of the village. Tsarang monastery is one of the most beautiful monasteries lies in Annapurna Conservation Area and falls in Upper Mustang, which has both protected and restricted status. Lo Manthang 3700m, the city of wall with its unique charm of mustang, one of the famous monasteries in the region, known as the last forbidden kingdom, six days walking distance from Jomsom, and has the greatest library of a superb collection of sacred text, huge and ancient Chortens.
The route climbs steadily from the north of the Annapurna near Jomsom to the medieval capital of Lo Manthang, following the remote caravans of salt trading route, exploring couple of days in Tibetan plateau through colorful rock canyons. The return route takes some of days through Muktinath temple to complete our trek at Pokhara. Upper Mustang preserves predominantly a lot of Tibetan cultures, semi-arid desert conditions with towering cliffs, desert canyons, and a wall of prayer stones.
